The Department: The Pew Health Group seeks to improve the health and well being of all Americans. Based on research and critical analysis, the Pew Health Group advocates policies that reduce unacceptable risks, especially in food, medical, financial and consumer products. Position Overview The Senior Officer reports to Pew Health Group’s Deputy Director. The position is responsible for helping advance PHG’s overall programmatic strategy, especially through the investigation and development of creative, new program ideas. The position requires a seasoned researcher, journalist, public health professional, or policy analyst who is knowledgeable about or experienced in key actors influencing national health and consumer policymaking—e.g., Congress, executive branch, new and traditional media, grass roots and coalition politics, academe and think tanks, trade and professional organizations, and industry. The research involves exploring policy opportunities and initiatives which further Pew Health Group programmatic goals, and identifying where Pew’s advocacy, research or convening capacity can uniquely make a significant and positive policy impact in the health and consumer sector. It includes public opinion research, scientific and technical study, expert and leadership interviews, legislative and political analysis, technical meeting and conference reporting, market and economic investigation, and fundraising searches. In addition, the position requires the ability to identify and manage select external contractors and consultants. She/he must be able to make the case persuasively for recommended strategies through internal, in depth written reports, oral presentations, planning meetings, and Pew leadership and board documents. These reports and presentations must not only demonstrate sound policy judgment and analysis but also suggest directions for specific initiatives and partnerships. The Senior Officer must develop extensive institutional knowledge of Pew and its policy work—past and present—in order effectively provide PHG leadership with expert advice on potential policy initiatives and opportunities. The position calls for the capacity both to work independently and as an integral and productive part of the Pew Health Group team.
