Pew Environment Group
The mission of the Environment group is to promote policies and practices that protect the global atmosphere, preserve healthy forests and marine ecosystems.
 
For the past two decades, the Environment group of The Pew Charitable Trusts has been a major force in driving conservation policy in the United States, and increasingly internationally. The group’s work is focused on reducing the scope and severity of three major global environmental problems: 

  • Dramatic changes to the Earth’s climate brought about by the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases in the planet’s atmosphere;
  • The erosion of large wilderness ecosystems that contain a great part of the world’s remaining biodiversity; and,
  • The destruction of the world’s marine environment, with a particular emphasis on global fisheries.

Government Operations

The Pew Environment Group Government Relations Team provides strategic guidance regarding Congressional and Executive branch outreach to all PEG campaigns. Coordinating with campaign managers, PCT legal affairs, and PCT Government Relations, PEG Government Relations produces fact sheets and other materials for distribution, maintains vote counts and target lists for each campaign, relays information on Congressional and Administration priorities and action, advises campaigns on government-related strategy, and attends campaign lobbying meetings with campaign staff.

 

Position Overview

The Senior Associate is an integral part of the Government Relations team in Washington, DC and will have responsibilities in all areas of government communications, including communicating with Congressional staff, coordinating Pew Environment Group campaign efforts with Congress and the Administration, producing materials, and maintaining vote counts.  He or she will report to and work closely with the Director of Government Relations.



Responsibilities:
  • Work with Pew Environment Group campaign managers and staff to support and coordinate the government outreach activities of the various campaigns.
  • Research relevant policymaker needs and create fact sheets and other materials for distribution to Congress and government officials and for web use. Review materials produced by campaigns.
  • Direct or perform targeted advocacy research efforts for targeting policymakers.
  • In coordination with campaign staff and Director of Government Relations, advise on targeted advocacy research efforts needed for specific government targets or Members of Congress.
  • Manage information and intelligence on legislative targets and maintain vote records for all PEG campaigns.
  • Schedule and attend lobbying or educational visits with Congressional staff.
  • Work with Pew Field Department to ensure that field organizers are equipped with necessary campaign information for their targets.
  • Liaise with other members of the environmental community, consumer organizations, or other partner groups on government-related requests.
  • Work with and direct government affairs consultants in support of campaign activities
  • Help Director of Government Relations to respond to internal administrative requests and responsibilities including helping to compile and collect data for contracts, reports or memos, scheduling meetings, ensuring adherence to internal and external deadlines. 
  • Work with Pew Environment Group communications to develop web materials relevant to policymaker requests or information needs.  


Requirements:
  • 4 to 8 years of professional experience.
  • College degree required.  Advanced degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, including communicating complex ideas for a general audience.
  • Experience in working with policymakers and staff.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with a variety of stakeholders including staff, partners, consultants and allies.
  • A detail-oriented style focused on results. Ability to work autonomously and independently, yet in a cooperative spirit.
  • Strong writing and research skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
