The Philadelphia Program

Through the Philadelphia Program Pew seeks to enhance civic life in its hometown. We partner with many local institutions in encouraging a thriving arts and cultural community, supporting the health and welfare of the region’s most vulnerable residents, informing discussion on important issues facing the city, and, more broadly, strengthening Philadelphia’s appeal to visitors and residents alike.
 
The Pew Fund, part of the Philadelphia program, is Pew’s primary vehicle for providing support to organizations who help some of the region’s most disadvantaged individuals and families. The Pew Fund focuses on three populations: frail elderly, poor children, youth and families; and vulnerable adults. The program supports close to 100 nonprofits in Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties.

 

Position Overview
This Pew Fund officer position offers a unique opportunity to help guide the use of Pew’s local resources in support of high-quality and effective services for populations in need, with a particular focus on disadvantaged children and youth.  The Pew Fund’s approach is rigorous with a focus on research-informed strategies that will lead to measurable improvements in the lives of those most vulnerable.
 
The ideal candidate will have significant and substantive work experience in the health and human services arena, with demonstrated knowledge of the needs of vulnerable individuals and families as well as the complex public policy, financing and demographic issues facing nonprofit service providers.  The candidate will also have the ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse individuals and organizations in the nonprofit, public and private sectors.
 
The program officer reports to the Project Director of the Pew Fund. 

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Independently oversee a substantial portfolio of awards for disadvantaged children, youth and families.  Manage relationships with grantees, monitor their progress toward achieving planned outcomes and, as necessary and appropriate, help them to address challenges in meeting their grant outcomes.
  • Assess Pew Fund proposals for funding consideration across the populations served by the program. 
  • Prepare recommendations for board approval, involving the negotiation of project deliverables, timelines and budgets. Work closely with Pew’s Grant Program Services staff to establish reporting and payment schedules.
  • Track closely changes in public policy, government funding, demographic trends and research and best practices and apply this knowledge to the Pew Fund’s grant-making for children, youth and families.
  • Represent Pew at public forums and speaking engagements.  Prepare written materials for external use.
  • Contribute to and participate in tasks of the department as assigned.

 

Requirements

 

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree in social welfare policy or other relevant field strongly preferred.
  • At least eight years of experience that demonstrates a high level of understanding of the health and human service organizations and the environment in which they operate.
  • Significant knowledge of research and programs which promote the well-being of children and youth.
  • Demonstrated time and project-management skills, including the ability to think creatively, juggle multiple priorities, adjust to changing circumstances, organize time and remain attentive to details.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical skills, including the ability to synthesize and summarize large amounts of information and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue.
  • Ability to write clearly and cogently for internal and public audiences.
  • A strong drive for achieving measurable results.
  • Seasoned judgment with the capacity to make difficult choices, justify recommendations and provide constructive feedback to colleagues and partners.
  • Experience working with a broad range of stakeholders including community-based nonprofit organizations, policy makers and other potential partners for the Pew Fund program. 
  • Ability to work collegially within a creative, fast-paced corporate culture that emphasizes excellence and team work.

 

Travel
The travel is primarily focused on the Philadelphia region.  Occasional travel to meetings outside of the region is required.
