Project Description:
Pew’s health programs utilize research and critical analysis to improve the public’s health and well-being. The health care products project works to enhance the safety and effectiveness of medical products routinely purchased by Americans, including compounded drugs, over-the-counter medications, dietary supplements and other products regulated by the Food and Drug Administration.


Position Overview:
The senior associate, health care products, based in Pew’s Washington, DC, office, will inform and influence public policy by contributing to an outreach and advocacy agenda to achieve the goals of the project. This will include developing subject matter expertise related to FDA regulation of health care products including but not limited to dietary supplements and over-the-counter drugs; stakeholder engagement; coalition building; policy analysis; creating advocacy materials; and contributing to the project’s legislative campaign.

Reporting to the project director, the senior associate will work closely with communications, government relations, contracts, operations, and other projects at Pew. The position has a set time frame that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support.


  • Develop and maintain broad knowledge of the regulation and safety risks associated with dietary supplements, over-the-counter drugs and other FDA-regulated products. 
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of advocacy campaigns to improve the safety of dietary supplements, over-the-counter drugs, and compounded drugs.
  • Conduct outreach and manage coalitions of consumer, public health, medical professional and industry organizations to build support for policy priorities.
  • Organize and coordinate meetings and conferences.
  • Track stakeholder positions on project priorities and related policy issues.
  • Excellent negotiating and persuasion skills, both in one-on-one and group situations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop and manage productive, collaborative relationships with staff, various departments, consultants, and external partners.
  • Draft comment letters, policy briefs, fact sheets, talking points, email updates and other advocacy materials and develop strategies for their effective dissemination.
  • Work with project, government relations, communications, and operations staff to develop and implement advocacy strategies.
  • Monitor and identify emerging FDA policy issues relevant to the project and its priorities.


  • A Bachelor’s degree is required; advanced degree in a public health or policy-related field preferred.
  • A minimum of four years of relevant experience in legislative campaigns, advocacy or policy analysis, including working with federal policy makers, researchers, coalitions, advocates and other stakeholders. 
  • Knowledge of FDA regulation of health care products is helpful.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to articulate complex ideas, thoughts and concepts clearly to lay audiences. 
  • A keen understanding of the importance of rigorous, timely and policy-relevant research; experience disseminating it effectively to policy makers, the media and the public.
  • Ability to focus quickly on the essence of an issue, as well as to identify, understand, and synthesize different policy perspectives.
  • Demonstrated project- and time-management skills, including the ability to think strategically, juggle multiple priorities, adjust to changing circumstances, resolve problems creatively and logically, organize time efficiently and remain attentive to details.
  • Ability to work professionally and collegially within a creative, fast-paced corporate culture that emphasizes excellence and teamwork.
  • Prior to commencing employment with Pew, candidates for this position who were registered to lobby in any jurisdiction must certify termination of previous registration(s) and provide copies of termination notices with said jurisdiction(s) to Pew.

This position is expected to include occasional overnight travel for meetings and conferences.
