    Program Overview
    The environmental science division (ESD) works to generate and synthesize scientific research to inform conservation policy and frame solutions to global environmental challenges. ESD encompasses three programs: the Pew Fellows Program in Marine Conservation awards three year fellowships to outstanding individuals who undertake projects designed to develop and implement solutions to improve conservation of the sea; the Conservation Science program works to identify, develop, and fund research to address specific questions relevant to Pew’s environmental initiatives; the Lenfest Ocean Program supports independent, peer-reviewed scientific projects to inform selected marine-conservation priorities. Several division staff work across the three programs to better connect research projects and results to conservation policy and practices.


    Position Overview
    The coordinator provides critical support to several ESD teams and the ESD director. The coordinator helps the Pew Marine Fellows and Conservation Science programs manage their grants processes, from making awards to tracking projects and acting as a liaison to grantees for issues concerning logistics and grant reports. Another key focus is working with staff to organize events, including the annual meeting of the Pew Marine Fellows program, expert workshops, and internal meetings. Other duties include helping prepare and track budgets and finding and obtaining scientific papers and technical documents.


    The coordinator reports to the Project Director, Science and Policy, and will be based in Pew’s Washington, DC, office. The position has a set time frame that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support.


    • Provide support for the Pew Marine Fellowship nomination, application, review, selection and grant award processes. Help implement new grant-making software, develop proficiency, and assist other users. 
    • Coordinate the development of Conservation Science research proposals with external researchers, including sharing appropriate templates and responding to questions about proposal logistics. Systematically track the status of Conservation Science research projects.
    • Coordinate check-in meetings with Conservation Science grantees and Pew Marine Fellows; respond to grantee questions about logistics and reporting. 
    • Maintain detailed program records in online databases for the Pew Marine Fellows and Conservation Science programs.
    • Work with Pew Marine Fellows Program staff to plan its annual meeting, including by producing the meeting program book, helping manage the web-based registration process, and communicating with attendees about meeting logistics.
    • Work with project staff to plan and execute other events, such as report releases, conferences and large meetings. Organize and copy edit materials for selected internal meetings; take and circulate meeting notes. 
    • Research topics by obtaining scientific papers and other technical documents. Liaise with Pew Research Services staff.
    • Track expenditures against selected budgets, such as budgets for external grants, and ensure that expenses are coded appropriately. Help to prepare budgets and narrative summaries, including for internal purposes and for materials concerning external grants. 
    • Assist the director to track and coordinate Pew attendance at scientific meetings.
    • Contribute to other activities as needed.


    • Associate’s degree required. Bachelor’s degree with a major in environmental science, marine science, ecology, or a related field strongly preferred. 
    • One year of relevant work experience. Grants-management experience a plus.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to keep multiple projects moving forward.
    • Attention to detail when entering and reviewing data and records. Experience with project tracking and database management is highly desirable. 
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and concisely, both orally and in writing
    • Ease with learning to use new software. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel. Knowledge of Sharepoint or Cvent a plus.
    • Strong interpersonal skills--able to develop and manage productive and collaborative relationships.
    • Ability to anticipate needs. Self-directed to take action and resolve issues.
    • Responsiveness to requests and flexibility to work as part of a team or independently to meet goals. 

    Minimal travel, if any, is expected for this position.
