    The Communications department supports leaders at all levels of the institution to promote project and campaign efforts, inform key audiences, and protect and advance Pew’s reputation. The department provides a comprehensive range of communications services for all programmatic and administrative units and Trusts-operated projects. Our in-house expertise includes: strategy and message development; editorial support; design and creative services; media event planning; digital and video production; and social media. The unit oversees all communications policies, guidelines, and processes in order to ensure production of the highest quality work and effectively steward Pew's resources.


    Position Overview
    This position, based in Pew's Brisbane office, reports to the Manager, Communications based in Melbourne, and is a member of the Pew communications staff supporting Pew's environmental work. The Senior Associate supports work primarily on the Outback to Oceans campaign, including the development of public facing and specialized audience campaign communications, mobilizing public engagement in projects and promoting issues and spokespeople in international and country specific media. position requires excellent interpersonal and organizational abilities, and proven writing and editing abilities for print and online platforms, as well as experience working with networks of supporters, media relations, and senior staff support.


    Salary Range: $84,000-$94,000 AUD depending on experience.


    Media Relations, Public Engagement, and Communications Strategy

    • Implements media and communications strategies that support Pew’s short and long-term campaign objectives in Australia.
    • Provides accurate and timely advice and support to Pew’s campaign team leaders.
    • Develops and maintains strong relationships with national, state and regional print, television, radio and online reporters, and strategically cultivates stories on campaign issues.
    • Writes media releases, alerts, and background briefing documents for reporters and broadcast producers.
    • Develops story ideas and pitches them to reporters, including identification of media opportunities and generating feature articles for relevant publications, websites and other platforms.
    • Coordinates campaign response to all media calls and enquiries.
    • Designs and implements media events, including traditional news conferences and in-person and telephone briefings.
    • Compiles and analyses media coverage and helps keep stakeholders up to date on our work.


    • Monitors daily media commentary and coverage on key issues that relate to Pew’s campaign areas, to inform and support campaign team leaders.
    • Coordinates activities with U.S.-based Communications staff and with the communications officers of other environmental organisations involved in Pew’s work in Australia.
    • Works with colleagues in Communications to ensure rapid responses to negative information about campaigns or Pew.
    • Creates regular reporting system to keep Pew colleagues updated on campaign developments and potential communications challenges.
    • Assists as necessary with communications activities in New Zealand.
    • Provides communications support to campaign partners, including communications materials such as media releases and talking points, opinion pieces, email actions and other digital content.
    • Manages clearances and approvals as required.

    Publications, Writing, Online & Multi-Media Communications

    • Working with Pew’s digital team, develops editorial calendar and content strategy; writes new content and updates existing content as needed.
    • Provides input and, working with the digital team, manages social media outreach for Australia.
    • Coordinates closely with U.S.-based digital and creative team on the development of videos and infographics.


    • Bachelor’s degree required including skills associated with completion of an undergraduate degree program in communications, journalism or related major, such as an understanding of media operations, news organizations and new media technologies, or equivalent employment experience. Graduate degree in public affairs, public policy or journalism a plus.
    • A minimum of four years of experience in media relations and campaign communications, preferably with public policy or nonprofit advocacy organizations.
    • Prior to commencing employment with Pew, candidates for this position who were registered to lobby in any jurisdiction must certify termination of previous registration(s) and provide copies of termination notices with said jurisdiction(s) to Pew.
    • Demonstrated understanding of Australian political, social and cultural movements.
    • Demonstrated experience assessing complex scientific studies and public policy proposals and translating them into compelling stories that resonate with the public.
    • Superior oral and written communications skills. Ability to synthesize material and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue and the means to address it. 
    • Basic content management skills, familiarity with digital strategies and social media.
    • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to develop and manage productive relationships with consultants, partners and others who contribute to the development of a project by anticipating possible outcomes.
    • Ability to work productively with a wide array of different people and institutions including management of complex or difficult political or social situations or topics.
    • Ability to set short- and long-term planning goals in line with program strategy. A task-oriented style, with focus on achieving clear and ambitious goals. 
    • Demonstrated ability to and to work towards multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization. 
    • Ability to develop and move projects forward with a high degree of independence and autonomy.
    • Confidence in presenting one’s own ideas and diplomatically persuading others as appropriate. Seasoned judgment, ability to make decisions, justify recommendations, and be responsive, clear and firm with colleagues and partners.

    This position is based in Pew’s office in Brisbane with occasional interstate travel as well as travel to Pew’s main office in Washington, DC. On occasion, this role requires travel to visit partners in remote areas, which may require driving skills or willingness to undertake alternative modes of transportation.
