    Antibiotic Resistance Project
    Pew’s antibiotic resistance project supports policies and research that would spur the creation of new antibiotics, establish stewardship programs to ensure that antibiotics are prescribed only when necessary in human health care settings, and reduce the need for antibiotics in food animals.


    Position Overview
    The officer, innovation, based in Pew’s Washington, DC office, will inform and influence public policy by leading the project’s work related to economic incentives for antibiotic discovery and development. Reporting to the manager, innovation, the officer will work closely with all members of the antibiotic resistance project team as well as other Pew colleagues in communications, research, government relations, and other areas. The position has a set time frame that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support.

     

    Responsibilities

    • Develop and maintain broad knowledge of the antibiotic industry and public policies to spur research, development, and commercialization of new antibiotics.
    • Contribute to the project’s policy goals by:
      • Tracking and analyzing federal legislative and regulatory proposals related to economic incentives that spur the discovery and development of new antibiotics;
      • Proactively identifying and monitoring the positions of influential stakeholders and thought leaders on key policy issues; and
      • Supporting the campaign strategy of the project, including assisting in policy development and advocacy activities.
    • Collaborate with Pew colleagues and program leadership, including government relations, communications, and other departments, to communicate Pew’s policy position and to develop issue briefs, factsheets, infographics, and other documents that inform policy deliberations and educate policy makers, media, and the public.
    • Identify, and develop and maintain relationships with, key stakeholders and experts to achieve policy objectives.
    • Plan and oversee the execution of stakeholder convenings, as well as present Pew to key stakeholders including policy makers.
    • Contribute to and participate in antibiotic stewardship work and broader Pew-wide projects as needed.

    Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree required, advance degree in a public health, economics, or policy-related field preferred.
    • At least eight years of relevant professional experience in the field, including policy analysis and development, as well as stakeholder management. Knowledge of policy and financing mechanisms for drug research and development preferred.
    • Prior to commencing employment with Pew, candidates for this position who were registered to lobby in any jurisdiction must certify termination of previous registration(s) and provide copies of termination notices with said jurisdiction(s) to Pew.
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and cogently for target audiences including internal audiences, policy makers, media, and the public.
    • Demonstrated ability to summarize large amounts of information to focus quickly on the essence of an issue, and identify, understand, and convey different policy perspectives.
    • Demonstrated ability to work professionally and collegially within a creative, fast-paced corporate culture that emphasizes excellence and teamwork.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to develop and manage productive relationships with consultants, partners, and stakeholders from the public, private, nonprofit, and academic sectors.
    • Demonstrated problem-solving skills. Strong ability to think strategically and creatively, adjust to changing circumstances, organize time, and remain attentive to detail.

    Travel
    This position is expected to include occasional overnight travel for meetings and conferences.
