    Project Overview
    The Health Impact Project, a collaboration of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and The Pew Charitable Trusts, encourages state, local, and national level organizations to include health considerations in policy decisions across multiple sectors, such as housing, transportation, and education. Research shows that the conditions in which people live, learn, work, and play influence their health, so the project also works to create cross-sector partnerships that include the expertise of health care and public health systems.


    Health impact assessments are one systematic and practical way to bring evidence to decisions. Through grants, technical assistance, training, and convenings, the project helps organizations and policymakers identify health-promoting policies, practices, and research for integration into their work. By engaging community stakeholders and translating research into action, the project seeks to make health a valued consideration in decision-making and improve the well-being of underserved places and populations.


    Position Overview
    The senior officer, based in Pew’s Washington, DC, office, reports to the project director and is responsible for overseeing current and emerging initiatives involving a multi-state learning collaborative to advance public health with a focus on addressing maternal and infant health and well-being. Pew anticipates selecting up to 10 states to participate in the initiative. The work focuses on building and strengthening state level cross-sector collaborations that include community partners as a strategy to address social determinants of health by broadly integrating health considerations into policies and practices. The senior officer also plays a lead role in generating new initiatives that advance the project’s current and future work with internal and external partners. The position has a set time frame that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support.


    • Implement the multi-state learning collaborative initiative to advance population health by providing subject matter expertise in maternal and infant health.
    • Apply subject matter expertise in maternal and infant health and well-being to inspire and guide adoption of evidence-based and cross-sector strategies, models, practices, and policies to address root causes of health disparities.
    • Assist states in documenting financial return/costs for employing evidence-based and cross-sector approaches.
    • Apply project management skills to: 1) design and implement national and regional convenings that will include training workshops, peer learning, and speakers and informal networking time; 2) provide technical assistance and support to state teams; 3) contribute to management of contracts and interface with contractors; and 4) plan and convene advisory committee meetings.
    • Employ research skills to prepare materials about evidence-based and promising practices related to maternal and infant health and well-being that includes presentations, reports, data visualization, and top-line summaries for multiple audiences.
    • Work with the project’s leadership team and Pew communications to synthesize data on the lessons and successes in formats that render the data and implications “user friendly” for policy makers, community stakeholders, and other audiences.
    • Undertake special projects and/or new initiatives aligned with Pew’s goals.
    • Contribute to and participate in Project and Pew initiatives and/or committees as needed.


    • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in public policy, public health, public administration, business administration, health administration, health economics, or health law strongly preferred.
    • At least 10 years of specialized experience in relevant fields. Seek candidate with work experience in state government who also has experience with community-based partnerships involving the government sector. Financial and policy analysis experience in private, public, or non-profit health sector setting related to social determinants of health also of interest.
    • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in the field of maternal and infant health and well-being to support state grantees with evidence-based strategies to address both preventable gaps and disparities.
    • Experience with regulatory impact assessment, cost-benefit analysis, and financial analysis that illustrates realized and potential cost savings and return on investment from “upstream” approaches preferred.
    • Demonstrated experience on social determinants of health and cross-sector collaboration as pathways to both individual and community health improvement with deep knowledge of maternal and infant health and well-being.
    • Demonstrated project management skills in tracking and managing work.
    • Experience publishing articles on topics such as social determinants of health, health impact assessment, regulatory impact assessment, cost-benefit analysis, or health economics preferred.
    • Strong writing, analytical, strategic thinking, and presentation skills. Ability to synthesize reports based on research from several disciplines. Ability to write clear and cogent materials that effectively translate scientific information and policy issues for policy makers, community members, the media, and other audiences.
    • Experience synthesizing and summarizing large amounts of information, focusing quickly on the essence of an issue, as well as identifying, understanding and proposing solutions that address different policy perspectives.
    • Strong systems skills including Microsoft Office products required; database, data visualization, and online research applications preferred. Ability to use statistical and qualitative software a plus.
    • Ability to work both independently and as a team member in a matrixed organization. Experience on multi-disciplinary teams is a plus.
    • Time and project management acumen in fast-paced environment with complex projects.
    • Ability to engage stakeholders spanning policy makers, community members and sectors that include academic, public, private and non-profit entities.
    • Ability to operate effectively within diverse political and policy environments and addressing conflicting policy perspectives in a way that maximizes programmatic objectives.


    Occasional domestic travel required for conferences and meetings.
