Communications Department
The Communications department supports leaders at all levels of the institution to promote project and campaign efforts, inform key audiences, and protect and advance Pew’s reputation. The department provides a comprehensive range of communications services for all programmatic and administrative units and Trusts-operated projects. Our in-house expertise includes: strategy and message development; editorial support; design and creative services; media event planning; digital and video production; and social media. The unit oversees all communications policies, guidelines, and processes in order to ensure production of the highest quality work and effectively steward Pew's resources.

Position Overview
Reporting to the senior director, digital and creative, the senior manager, project management, is responsible for the successful scoping, management and delivery of all communications products assigned to the digital and creative teams, the editorial team, and the institutional communications team. The ideal candidate must be enthusiastic, detail-oriented, and have demonstrable experience leading a team responsible for scoping and managing delivery of print, video, and digital projects.


  • Develops processes and guides their implementation and ongoing implementation.
  • Provides ongoing updates to senior leadership about status of key projects, team resourcing and capacity and proposed solutions for the mitigation of risk.
  • Supervises the project management team to ensure that all projects are delivered within the defined scope, quality, time and cost requirements.
  • Provides direction and guidance to project managers, digital strategists, creative and video team, and communications leads in the scoping and budgeting of recommended strategies.
  • Guides the project management team in their efforts to set internal/external level of effort, establish clear and achievable timelines, and identify appropriate resourcing required to deliver approved work.
  • Ensures that all relevant communications teams are working effectively within established governance, related processes, and policies that align with overall Pew strategy and goals.
  • Ensures the team effectively develops, tracks, and updates project schedules as required.
  • Assigns and monitors team tasks, providing task prioritization and direction.
  • Provides guidance as to which projects require strategic discussion vs. swift implementation.
  • Actively contributes to communications campaign strategy and planning phases.
  • Works in close coordination with relevant staff and external partners to plan, scope, and manage a variety of special projects and institutional initiatives.
  • Partners with department leadership and other stakeholders to identify opportunities and develop and prioritize projects.
  • Ensures teams are tracking projects effectively and documenting known challenges and lessons learned throughout workflows. Regularly briefs Senior Director and the department’s leadership team on project status, areas of success, and areas for improvement.
  • Ensures appropriate allocation of internal resources across all functional units within the Digital & Creative team.
  • As needed, trains team and others on project management software and create dashboards and other reports in the system to share critical information.
  • Creates periodic reports on projects and timelines for senior leadership.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 10+ years of professional experience with progressive responsibility for developing integrated digital strategy and campaign execution.
  • Minimum of 3 years of previous direct supervisory experience required including experience managing performance management process for direct reports and providing career development advice and counsel.
  • Prior to commencing employment with Pew, candidates for this position who were registered to lobby in any jurisdiction must certify termination of previous registration(s) and provide copies of termination notices with said jurisdiction(s) to Pew.
  • Digital / creative agency experience strongly preferred.
  • Deep understanding of the role of process in a creative environment and proven ability to collaboratively refine and rollout processes improvements.
  • Strategic thinking and fluent understanding of the unique characteristics of digital campaigns and projects.
  • Excellent written and communication skills, and experience applying them to account service.
  • Extremely detail oriented and organized, with the ability to prioritize work assignments.
  • Ability to collaborate with both external and internal team members.
  • Ability to develop cross-channel digital strategies that meet client/organizational goals.
  • Ability to work individually and collaboratively to develop and refine creative ideas, build consensus, and influence decisions.
  • Experience developing and executing issue-driven digital engagement campaigns designed to inform target audiences as well as recruit and activate grassroots advocates.
  • Exceptional skill with written and verbal communications and ability to effectively communicate strategic recommendations.
  • Deep working knowledge of the social and digital ecosystem, including working relationships with social platforms and partners.
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines, juggle multiple projects, and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional judgment when working with team members, client contacts, and vendors.

Occasional day travel or overnight trips to Pew’s Philadelphia office may be required.
