The Environmental Portfolio at The Pew Charitable Trusts
For more than 25 years, Pew has been a major force in engaging the public and policy makers about the causes, consequences, and solutions to some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. Our environment work spans all seven continents with more than 250 professionals working at the local, national, and international levels to reduce the scope and severity of global environmental problems, such as the erosion of large natural ecosystems that contain a great part of the world’s remaining biodiversity, and the destruction of the marine environment.

In the sea, reforms to how our oceans are managed are essential to address overfishing, pollution, and loss of habitat. Pew began its oceans program in the United States, focusing on ending overfishing and protecting fragile marine habitat. Starting in 2005, Pew’s ocean conservation program expanded around the world and played a significant role in reforming marine fisheries management in the European Union and on the high seas and creating marine reserves around the world. Our work is grounded in the best available science and pursues domestic and international conservation measures that are long-term and provide permanent, durable protections for marine ecosystems.
 
Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy
Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy (“PBOL”) is a project of Pew which works to protect and conserve some of the Earth’s most important and unspoiled marine ecosystems through the establishment of very large, highly protected marine reserves.
 
In 2006, the Pew Charitable Trusts (“Pew”) and several partners launched the Global Ocean Legacy project in an effort to establish the world’s first generation of great marine parks. In 2017, Pew and the Bertarelli Foundation joined forces to create, the Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy Project, with the goal of establishing the first generation of ecologically significant and effective marine protected areas around the world. This effort builds on a decade of work by both organizations to protect the ocean. Between them, they have helped to obtain designations to safeguard over 8 million square kilometers (3 million square miles) of ocean by working with philanthropic partners, indigenous groups, community leaders, government officials, and scientists. Recognizing that new science indicates we need to protect 30 percent of our oceans, PBOL aims to help increase the number of fully protected marine reserves from nine to 15 by 2022.
 
Position Overview
The manager, Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy, is responsible for delivering campaign outcomes within the Latin American and Pacific portfolio of the PBOL project, specifically related to ongoing work in the Galapagos, Mexico and French Polynesia as well as managing staff supporting campaign efforts across the marine habitat sub-portfolio. The manager, based in Pew’s Washington, D.C. office, reports to the senior manager, Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy. The position has a set time frame that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support.

Responsibilities

  • In close coordination with the senior manager, and with input of other PBOL colleagues, lead the development of campaign strategies, particularly in relation to Latin America campaigns in Galapagos and Mexico. In addition, help to identify new opportunities and strategies to support achievement of these campaigns.
  • Lead implementation of relevant strategy and tactics to achieve campaign objectives, including through management of staff and consultants and through the development and management of grants and/or contracts, in close coordination with the senior manager and other key programmatic leads.
  • Lead development and implementation of the strategy related to the Island Voices advisory group, which advises PBOL on the perspective and knowledge of island people in support of campaign initiatives and marine conservation. Maintain relationships with government officials and local stakeholders in relevant geographies, and identify new opportunities and strategies to support existing marine protected areas and other opportunities that support project goals as they arise.
  • In partnership with project leadership and field staff, create and implement the project’s French Polynesia campaign strategy, and ensure close coordination and cooperation with other project sites to ensure goals are aligned across the project.
  • Contribute to PBOL integration into the boarder marine habitat sub-portfolio, including identifying shared priorities and needs, specifically efforts to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030.
  • Manage and mentor staff, including ensuring appropriate allocation of staff time; guiding development of staff annual performance plans; provide regular feedback on individual performance; and support staff development to improve skills and technical knowledge.
  • Maintain an active and thorough understanding of the issues and any evolution in the related science, policies, laws, and current events in locations/countries listed herein.
  • Forge and maintain relationships with important policymakers, coalition groups (including the Ocean Ambassadors group), expert bodies, and other constituencies to advance campaign objectives. Collaborate with other allies in the field to maximize the likelihood of achieving identified objectives.
  • Continually assess team performance against relevant campaign objectives, and, where these are at risk of not being met, revise strategies and take appropriate steps to ensure objectives are met.
  • Oversee the relevant portion of the campaign budget related to Latin American and Pacific region campaigns, monitor related expenses, and coordinate with the senior manager on any necessary changes to the budget.
  • Serve as spokesperson on marine protected areas to cultivate and engage the public and key constituencies on core issues. This includes representing Pew at meetings, conferences, and/or on expert panels/groups, authoring articles and other communications, and providing interviews to outside sources.
  • Coordinate closely with other Pew departments, as needed, including on staff management, contract development and management, and budget management. Maintain close working relationships with staff in communications, government relations, and conservation science.
  • Contribute to and participate in the tasks of the marine habitat sub-portfolio and environment portfolio as assigned, as well as broad Pew projects and activities, as needed.
  • Collaborate with PBOL colleagues to ensure transparent communication between Pew and Bertarelli Foundation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
  • At least eight years of applicable experience. Expertise in marine conservation policy and knowledge of project management desired.
  • Minimum of two plus years of previous direct supervisory experience required including experience managing performance management process for direct reports and providing career development advice and counsel.
  • Prior to commencing employment with Pew, candidates for this position who were registered to lobby in any jurisdiction must certify termination of previous registration(s) and provide copies of termination notices with said jurisdiction(s) to Pew.
  • Ability to set short- and long-term planning goals in line with project and campaign strategies, and to analyze budgetary information and assess capacity. A task-oriented style, with focus on achieving clear and ambitious goals. Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization. Ability to develop and move projects forward with a high degree of independence and autonomy. 
  • Superior oral and written communications skills. Able to synthesize large amounts of information, determine whether issues are ripe for reform or intervention, and identify steps to achieve change. Confidence in presenting one’s own ideas and diplomatically persuading others as appropriate. Ability to communicate complex ideas for a general audience. 
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects in dispersed geographies.
  • Seasoned judgment. Able to make decisions, justify recommendations and be professional, responsive, and authoritative in communications with consultants, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Able to develop and manage productive relationships with colleagues, consultants, partners, and others who contribute to the campaign. Highly diplomatic; able to work productively with a wide array of people and institutions that frequently disagree with and are in competition with one another.
  • Excellent analytic and problem-solving skills, and a results-oriented approach.
  • Media-savvy and politically astute. Clear, effective writing style. Strong and persuasive oral presentation and facilitation skills.
Travel
Frequent international travel anticipated. Travel may cross weekends and, on occasion, holidays to accommodate meeting schedules.
