Today, we conduct research on emerging topics, develop data-driven reports, and highlight innovative, non-partisan approaches in addressing complex problems at the federal, state, and local levels as well as the interplay that can occur between jurisdictions. Current initiatives focus on health, fiscal and economic policy, and safety and justice, and take into account significant trends such as evolving technologies, and the increasing racial and ethnic diversity in the United States population. Our teams explore and advance effective, evidence-based policies using credible, timely, and accessible research, assessing public support for change, identifying approaches that have proved successful elsewhere, and bringing together diverse perspectives to find common ground. We work in collaboration with organizations that share our commitment to rigorous research, measurable results, and public service, and we focus on developing durable policy change. In addition, our teams use strategic outreach and dissemination to ensure that good information is widely communicated to decision-makers, media, influential stakeholders, and the public. Position OverviewThe senior director for the health group – which contemplates a wide spectrum of health issues and defines “health” broadly to include public health and social determinants of health – is based in Pew’s Washington, D.C., office. This position manages directors and project directors, as well as other project leadership and reports to the vice president and head of government performance. The senior director will oversee seven existing projects, which focus on the following issues: 1) food safety; 2) antibiotic resistance; 3) health care products; 4) health information technology; 5) oral health care; 6) the role of local and state government in advancing aspects of community health; and 7) substance use disorder. These efforts have demonstrated success in driving policy change at the local, state, and federal level. We are exploring opportunities to develop additional initiatives for consideration by Pew’s board, which build on the experience and insight developed through previous health projects.   The annual combined budget of these projects exceeds $15 million. The health group comprises approximately 70 staff.   The senior director, in partnership with Pew leadership and the existing health directors and project directors, will be a lead spokesperson for Pew’s health work at the local, state, and federal level.  S/he will be responsible for the oversight of the execution of existing projects, the wind-down of projects that have met their objectives, the exploration of new areas of focus, and the launch of new projects.  The senior director will be instrumental in establishing and maintaining a compelling set of priorities and organizing framework for the health group’s work; communicating the vision of the group’s work to both internal and external stakeholders; identifying opportunities to strengthen existing lines of work and develop new lines of work at Pew by collaborating across the institution, including with other program units (e.g.  safety and justice, environment, research and science, Philadelphia); playing a leadership role in the institution as a member of Pew’s management team; and enhancing the health group’s relationships with external stakeholders including government officials and representatives from the nonprofit, private, and academic sectors.

Our environment work spans all seven continents with more than 250 professionals working at the local, national, and international levels to reduce the scope and severity of global environmental problems, such as the erosion of large natural ecosystems that contain a great part of the world’s remaining biodiversity, and the destruction of the marine environment. Pew has worked in the United States and Canada since 1990 to protect vast stretches of wilderness and more recently expanded our land conservation efforts to Australia’s Outback and Chilean Patagonia. Safeguarding these places offers an opportunity to conserve wildlife habitat, shorelines and landscapes for current and future generations. Our work relies on the sciences of conservation, biology, and economics to advocate for practical and durable solutions to the loss of biodiversity. In the sea, reforms to how our oceans are managed are essential to address overfishing, pollution, and loss of habitat. Pew began its oceans program in the United States, focusing on ending overfishing and protecting fragile marine habitat. Starting in 2005, Pew’s ocean conservation program expanded around the world and played a significant role in reforming marine fisheries management in the European Union and on the high seas and creating marine reserves around the world. Our work is grounded in the best available science and pursues domestic and international conservation measures that are long-term and provide permanent, durable protections for marine ecosystems. Conserving Marine Life in the United States Pew's conserving marine life in the United States (CMLUS) program focuses on protecting essential habitats found in coastal waters like oyster reefs, seagrass meadows, kelp forests, and salt marsh that provide nursery areas, food and refuge for a diversity of marine wildlife. This work includes working with communities and partners to advance management measures at the state and federal levels that conserve and restore economically and ecologically valuable coastal habitats. Additionally, the program promotes an ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management that takes into account the interdependent nature of ocean life. This work includes advancing measures that protect forage fish that feed dependent marine life, protect ocean habitat such as deep-sea corals, reduce the incidental capture and killing of non-target species (known as bycatch), and integrate the use of comprehensive ecosystem plans into fisheries conservation and management. Position Overview The manager, conserving marine life in the U.S. is responsible for overseeing implementation of coastal habitat conservation initiatives in the New England and mid-Atlantic states, and leading work with managers and stakeholders to establish an ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management in federal waters of the region. They will focus on advancing Pew’s project goals in three major areas: coastal habitat and restoration initiatives with a focus on oyster plans and protection; efforts to advance ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) in relevant fishery councils and commissions; and, cross-cutting program initiatives and emerging opportunities, such as establishing a new National Estuarine Research Reserve and seagrass conservation efforts.  They will focus on advancing Pew’s project goals primarily in Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Delaware, and Virginia for coastal habitat, and at the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council (MAFMC), Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and other decision-making bodies for EBFM.  The manager also oversees scoping for new potential lines of work in New England and the mid-Atlantic, and conduct outreach to stakeholders and decision-makers in the regions as needed to advance Pew’s coastal habitat and fisheries objectives. The manager oversees three staff focused on program objectives in the region. The manager reports to the project director, conserving marine life in the U.S., and is based in Pew’s Washington, D.C. office. This position is contingent upon board approval in December 2020.

The initiative provides research and analysis on issues where federal and state fiscal interests and funding overlap. Our goal is to provide the data and analysis that is missing from the conversation and to inform the critical decisions by policymakers at both levels of government.  The initiative produces both short analytical pieces that are timed to inform the current debate and longer more in-depth research to illuminate issues where data are missing from the debate. The topics are focused on issues where federal and state interests intersect and cover both spending and tax policies – ranging from higher education and Medicaid to natural disasters and tax conformity, among others. Position Overview The officer will work with the director and the project’s management staff to implement the current research agenda, develop accessible data and information, and play a leadership role in the exploration of new research and lines of work. The officer authors and co-authors research papers and issue briefs, critically reviews project materials, helps implement the project’s communications and outreach strategy, presents research findings in appropriate venues, and may oversee contracts. The position, based in Pew’s Washington, D.C., office, reports to the director. This work involves taking a research concept from initial hypothesis and proposal through post-analysis data checks, fact checking, and peer review. RRS advises project teams on the best methodological or analytical approaches, datasets and, if appropriate, external vendors to achieve desired outcomes. RRS staff also provides direct research assistance, most commonly data collection and literature reviews, as required. Finally, RRS fosters a Pew research community that leverages and builds staff expertise, tools and capacity across project teams and on a wide range of topics and disciplines. On behalf of projects, RRS coordinates with other Pew divisions and departments involved in the research process. The aim is to help ensure excellent, unimpeachable research outputs that significantly impact major policy changes at the federal, state, local, and international levels. Position OverviewThe officer will review and comment on written research design and research methods plans prior to management approval to do the work. The officer will provide methodological expertise in support of research related to Pew’s investments in health issues. The project includes three interconnected components. First, the project will create and maintain the infrastructure for a funders’ network focused on coordinating and strengthening the field of evidence use. Second, the project will organize and facilitate workshops, or “ideas labs,” that bring together funders, researchers, decision-makers, and other stakeholders to address critical gaps in knowledge about increasing evidence use and to develop priorities for research agendas or other initiatives that could address pressing public policy issues. Third, to help build momentum for practices likely to increase the use of evidence in policy and practice, the project will develop, tailor, and share toolkits that capture promising approaches for external partners. Position OverviewThe senior associate is responsible for supporting the work of the evidence project. Specifically, the senior associate will work with the project director and team to (1) support the organization and implementation of a new funders’ network focused on evidence use; (2) support the development and implementation of intensive workshops to develop policy-relevant research agendas or to address critical issues within the evidence use field; and (3) support the development and dissemination of key materials for the toolkits and technical assistance designed to increase research use.  The position, based in Pew’s Washington, D.C., office, reports to the project director, evidence project. The CS team enhances the scientific foundation of Pew’s environmental work by providing centralized technical expertise, developing research projects, and identifying new scientific results relevant to Pew’s existing and emerging conservation interests. Integrating the results of peer-reviewed research into public policy and campaign strategy development are significant components of the program’s work. Position OverviewThe senior officer works with senior staff on the environment and strategy teams on issues relating to the human dimensions of environmental conservation. The position provides critical thought leadership and strategic support to help design new and existing conservation objectives.  The senior officer also plays a lead role in developing a broad array of research projects in collaboration with Pew’s environment and strategy staff. To achieve key tasks, the senior officer must develop close working relationships and become a trusted advisor to strategy and environment colleagues and senior leadership. Today, millions of families use alternative financing arrangements such as contracts-for-deed or rent-to-own to purchase a home, but these options often cost more and offer fewer protections than mortgages. This project aims to help inform policymakers and other stakeholders about market practices, evaluate borrower experiences and the efficacy of consumer protections, and promote access to safe, affordable home loans. To learn more about the home financing project, please visit the project’s webpage. Specifically, the project will: - Produce credible, independent, and nonpartisan research to help answer questions about consumers’ experiences and opinions, the contract provisions of alternative home financing arrangements and how they vary across states, the federal and state laws that govern these arrangements, and potential solutions to documented problems; - Promote findings through educational outreach and national and local media;  - Engage policy and business audiences about these issues; and - Provide customized technical assistance informed by research. Philadelphia Research and Policy InitiativeThe Philadelphia research and policy initiative enables policymakers to identify and enact policies that improve city government and the well-being of the city's residents. Central to this work is the production of timely, well-documented reports for the benefit of policymakers, the news media and the public at large. Working directly with stakeholders, the initiative conducts in-depth research, looking beyond the city and region for relevant information from comparable cities. Our approach includes researching important policy topics and solutions, benchmarking demographic data and polling to measure progress, holding policy-oriented convenings, and engaging extensively with policymakers to increase the impact of our work. The goal is to strengthen housing quality and stability for Philadelphia residents, with a particular focus on informing efforts to innovate, modernize, and expand programs that finance home purchases and repairs. One of the most promising has been the Project Finance for Permanence, or PFP. The PFP model protects ecosystems at a large scale and avoid the challenges of “paper parks” by ensuring that conservation management is properly resourced and durable. Because the PFP model requires comprehensive planning and design that involves a wide range of stakeholders, PFPs also address the frequent piecemeal approach to conservation whereby areas of land receive varying levels of protection without consideration for ecological connectivity, wildlife corridors, or community development needs. An emerging collaboration among Pew, the World Wildlife Fund, The Nature Conservancy, and philanthropist Ben Walton, represented by his family office Zomalab, aims at helping to meet these ambitious and important goals. It is built around the innovative PFP conservation finance mechanism. PFPs have the potential to catalyze and spur tremendous investments from private, government, and multilateral funds to permanently conserve some of the world’s most spectacular and ecologically important marine and terrestrial natural ecosystems. In addition to safeguarding nature, a tenet of this initiative would be to ensure that expanded protection and improved management of parks and reserves provide economic benefits to local communities through tourism and other enterprises based on sustainable uses. Position Overview The senior officer - Conservation and Financial Planning will report to the project lead for the Global Finance for Permanence Initiative, with strong dotted-line reporting to the vice president, finance and treasurer, and will be a founding member of this new effort at Pew. Our work is grounded in the best available science and our goal is to reverse the decline of ocean life ranging from sharks and tunas to penguins and whales, and the habitat on which they depend. Chilean Patagonia Chile’s Patagonia is one of the last remaining intact wilderness areas of the world, yet today it is both under-recognized and under-protected. Pew and its partners are working to change that by promoting this region’s unique value in the world and developing and implementing policies to secure the long-term protection of this remarkable landscape.  Chilean Patagonia is on the west coast of the southern cone of South America, where the continent tapers toward the Antarctic Ocean. While many of Chile’s natural lands all have important ecological values, Patagonia is special because of its high degree of intactness, endemism and exceptional land and sea interconnectedness. Approximately 80 percent of this area remains unspoiled, therefore making it similar in ecological condition to Australia’s Outback and Canada’s Boreal, other places where Pew works. Although it is approximately one-fifth the size of the continental-scale Boreal in Canada and Outback, Chile’s Patagonia stretches over several hundred miles of important wilderness that features unique geography, oceanography and ecological productivity, including a lush temperate rainforest, glacier-carved valleys, windy grasslands, inland shorelines, and countless fjords and islands. In partnership with a robust network of non-governmental organizations in Chile, local  governments and local stakeholders, Pew will work to improve and enhance the protection of this landscape through the country’s park and reserve system, while also promoting public-private partnerships for new conservation efforts. Position Overview The administrative assistant, environment provides administrative support to staff in Pew’s Santiago, Chile office, including managing expense reimbursements, payment requests, and travel bookings; proofreading documents; and maintaining databases. The administrative assistant demonstrates superior language skills in both English and Spanish, as well as the ability to convey a range of cultural nuances and institutional and project needs between Santiago-based staff and partners and Washington, D.C.-based program and operations staff. Provide administrative support for meetings, events, and seminars both online and in-person; research and book meeting venues and related travel, prepare agendas, and manage technical components. In partnership with and at the direction of the officer, Chilean Patagonia project, perform office management duties such as supporting staff by answering phones and greeting incoming guests in the Santiago office; preparing mailings; paying bulls and purchasing office supplies; interacting with landlord and onsite technicians. First, the project has created and now supports the infrastructure for a funders’ network focused on coordinating and strengthening the field of evidence use. The project will tackle the dual barriers of (1) inadequate physical infrastructure, which results in the absence of a high-quality connection; and (2) affordability, when individual households and small businesses cannot afford those connections. Our work through research, outreach, technical assistance and advocacy seeks to develop and highlight state models to improve affordable broadband access; improve federal and state broadband regulations by establishing speed goals and technological standards, improving the marketplace to include non-legacy providers; and informing and shaping new federal and state appropriations for broadband and improving accountability.   Position Overview The associate I will provide research on budget, fiscal, economic, and other policies related to broadband issues at both the federal and state levels. While relatively small in area, these habitats are large in terms of ecosystem importance, forming a critical interface between the land and sea.  Countries are increasingly recognizing the role that protection of coastal wetlands can play as nature-based solutions within their revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement. Pew has been working directly in three countries – Costa Rica, Belize and Seychelles – to support the governments’ aim to include coastal wetland protections within their updated NDCs. Further, we are working with countries to support the development of financing plans to implement the coastal wetland portion of their NDC.  The resulting NDCs and financing plan could serve as examples for other countries, particularly those developing countries that may need international funding assistance for their coastal habitat protections. Position Overview The principal associate helps develop and implement project work to include coastal wetlands and coral reefs in countries’ NDCs and provide wider support to the team as needed. This position will report to the manager, coastal wetlands and coral reefs and is based in Washington, DC. The position has a set time frame that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support.

Our work is grounded in the best available science and pursues domestic and international conservation measures that are long-term and provide permanent, durable protections for marine ecosystems.  International Conservation UnitThe international conservation unit (ICU) works across Pew’s environment portfolio to ensure development of robust policy positions and strategy, provide specialized expertise, assist in developing and launching of new bodies of work, and provide for internal and external coordination, including coordinating Pew efforts around major international meetings. The ICU is an integral part of the broader environment team, which currently works to protect and better manage natural ecosystems such as lands, rivers, and the ocean, both in the United States and abroad.  Current projects focus on: establishing and improving marine protected areas; protecting ocean life on the high seas and in the deep sea; improving fisheries management; preventing ocean plastics; and protecting coastal wetlands, rivers, and terrestrial habitats such as Canada’s Boreal forest, U.S. public lands, Chilean Patagonia, and the Australian Outback.  Position Overview The senior associate, international conservation unit is responsible for facilitating internal and external coordination across the Environment portfolio particularly regarding Pew’s engagement in major international meetings; assisting in development of cross-campaign policy positions and strategies; working with individual project teams to advance their deliverables; developing and managing contracts; and, as needed, supporting the exploration of new work.
