Executive staff at Pew recognizes the importance of technology and supports related initiatives to advance the institution’s goals and achieve and maintain a leadership position in the philanthropic community. As a result, the IT department is in a mode of continuous improvement, applying leading-edge technology to the pursuit of the goals of the institution. The department comprises highly competent, forward-thinking professionals who are responsible for the technology needs of all Pew staff, as well as for Pew’s subsidiaries in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. IT is organized into distinct areas of responsibility, including strategic alignment of technology with the business, the evaluation and acquisition of software and hardware, implementation of new systems and data repositories, and providing support for the extended network, desktop computer hardware, and software applications. Position Overview The Principal Associate, Network Engineer is a senior technical expert responsible for leading the design and operation of Pew’s wide and local area networks. The position is part of the Infrastructure Operations group which manages all on-premises, hosted or cloud infrastructure. The Principal Associate position requires knowledge in specialized technologies, such as network architecture, routing and switching protocols, firewall and load balancing, communication circuits, VOIP, VPN, wireless and security technologies. Ultimately, this position contributes to the larger responsibility of the Infrastructure Operations unit to ensure the alignment of Pew’s technology strategy and priorities with the goals and objectives of the organization. The Principal Associate reports to the Associate Manager, Network Engineering.

The department provides a comprehensive range of communications services for all programmatic and administrative units and Trusts-operated projects. The unit oversees all communications policies, guidelines, and processes in order to ensure production of the highest quality work and effectively steward Pew's resources. Position Overview This position, based in Pew’s Washington, DC office, reports to the manager, communications and is a member of the Pew communications staff supporting the work of the marine protection portfolio. He/she develops and implements communications strategies for projects to effectively communicate Pew’s work and messages. Our environment work spans all seven continents with more than 250 professionals working at the local, national, and international levels to reduce the scope and severity of global environmental problems, such as the erosion of large natural ecosystems that contain a great part of the world’s remaining biodiversity, and the destruction of the marine environment.   Pew has worked in the United States and Canada since 1990 to protect vast stretches of wilderness and more recently expanded our land conservation efforts to Australia’s Outback and Chilean Patagonia. Safeguarding these places offers an opportunity to conserve wildlife habitat, shorelines and landscapes for current and future generations. Our work relies on the sciences of conservation, biology, and economics to advocate for practical and durable solutions to the loss of biodiversity.   In the sea, reforms to how our oceans are managed are essential to address overfishing, pollution, and loss of habitat. Pew began its oceans program in the United States, focusing on ending overfishing and protecting fragile marine habitat. Starting in 2005, Pew’s ocean conservation program expanded around the world and played a significant role in reforming marine fisheries management in the European Union and on the high seas and creating marine reserves around the world. Our work is grounded in the best available science and pursues domestic and international conservation measures that are long-term and provide permanent, durable protections for marine ecosystems.   Flood-Prepared Communities Pew’s flood-prepared communities initiative works to reduce the impact weather-related catastrophes, such as flood and hurricanes, have on the U.S. economy, communities, and environment through four main policy areas: - Reforming of the National Flood Insurance Program; - Increased investment in mitigation programs and planning to help communities prepare for future floods; - Improved resiliency and durability requirements for new and rebuilt infrastructure in flood-prone areas; and - Promote nature-based solutions like open green space, marshes and mangroves to better protect property and the environment. Position Overview The senior manager is responsible for developing and executing an outreach strategy across ten states to adopt state-wide plans and frameworks that reduce unsustainable development in high risk areas. These plans should incentivize nature-based solutions, and are intended to improve floodplain management along significant portions of the nation’s rivers and coastlines. The senior manager develops relationships with governors, staff policy staff, planners, and mitigation specialists and oversees technical assistance to state planners in the development of state-wide plans. This position works closely with the state campaigns team, research, and government relations support divisions. It is supported by two direct reports, an officer and senior associate, as well as external consultants. This position, at times, works with external stakeholders, and is responsible for representing Pew with external audiences such as media and conferences. This position, based in Pew’s Washington, D.C., office, reports to the project director, flood-prepared communities. The position has a set time frame that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support.

It spans all of Pew’s programmatic work with a focus on advancing quality research and science and deploying research expertise to further the goals of ongoing projects. The portfolio reviews the design of new research projects across the institution to ensure they are high-quality, unbiased, and methodologically sound. The programmatic elements of the portfolio include specific projects related to biomedical science, environmental science, and fiscal federalism. In addition, research and science has a role in communicating timely, accurate information on state issues to the general public as the Pew daily news publication, Stateline, is part of our organization. StatelineA project of the Pew Charitable Trusts based in Washington, D.C., Stateline reports on state and local issues. In addition to publishing original content every weekday, Stateline collects state and local stories from around the country for its daily newsletter and produces special reports, such as its annual State of the States series. Stateline’s readership includes thousands of state officials, policymakers, business leaders, journalists, students of state government and ordinary citizens. The content appears at www.pewstates.org/stateline; the stories also run on news sites and in newspapers around the country.  Position OverviewThe senior associate, copy editor, will be primarily responsible for serving as the final gatekeeper before the publication of Stateline content. The successful candidate will become an integral part of the Stateline team, supporting the journalistic mission of the project by ensuring that articles are accurate and meet Pew’s rigorous standards. The senior associate will need to have a fondness for fact-checking, a keen eye for grammar, a good understanding of AP style and story flow, and a collaborative approach to working with reporters, other editors, and our production colleagues.  The position, based in Pew’s Washington, D.C., office, reports to the project director, executive editor. Today, we conduct research on emerging topics, develop data-driven reports, and highlight innovative, non-partisan approaches in addressing complex problems at the federal, state, and local levels as well as the interplay that can occur between jurisdictions. Current initiatives focus on health, fiscal and economic policy, and safety and justice, and take into account significant trends such as evolving technologies, and the increasing racial and ethnic diversity in the United States population. Our teams explore and advance effective, evidence-based policies using credible, timely, and accessible research, assessing public support for change, identifying approaches that have proved successful elsewhere, and bringing together diverse perspectives to find common ground. We work in collaboration with organizations that share our commitment to rigorous research, measurable results, and public service, and we focus on developing durable policy change. In addition, our teams use strategic outreach and dissemination to ensure that good information is widely communicated to decision-makers, media, influential stakeholders, and the public. Position OverviewThe senior director for the health group – which contemplates a wide spectrum of health issues and defines “health” broadly to include public health and social determinants of health – is based in Pew’s Washington, D.C., office. This position manages directors and project directors, as well as other project leadership and reports to the vice president and head of government performance. The senior director will oversee seven existing projects, which focus on the following issues: 1) food safety; 2) antibiotic resistance; 3) health care products; 4) health information technology; 5) oral health care; 6) the role of local and state government in advancing aspects of community health; and 7) substance use disorder. These efforts have demonstrated success in driving policy change at the local, state, and federal level. We are exploring opportunities to develop additional initiatives for consideration by Pew’s board, which build on the experience and insight developed through previous health projects.   The annual combined budget of these projects exceeds $15 million. The health group comprises approximately 70 staff.   The senior director, in partnership with Pew leadership and the existing health directors and project directors, will be a lead spokesperson for Pew’s health work at the local, state, and federal level.  S/he will be responsible for the oversight of the execution of existing projects, the wind-down of projects that have met their objectives, the exploration of new areas of focus, and the launch of new projects.  The senior director will be instrumental in establishing and maintaining a compelling set of priorities and organizing framework for the health group’s work; communicating the vision of the group’s work to both internal and external stakeholders; identifying opportunities to strengthen existing lines of work and develop new lines of work at Pew by collaborating across the institution, including with other program units (e.g.  safety and justice, environment, research and science, Philadelphia); playing a leadership role in the institution as a member of Pew’s management team; and enhancing the health group’s relationships with external stakeholders including government officials and representatives from the nonprofit, private, and academic sectors.

Efforts include working with communities and partners to advance policy and management measures at the state and federal levels that conserve and restore economically and ecologically valuable coastal habitats. Additionally, the project promotes an ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management that takes into account the interdependent nature of ocean life. This work includes advancing measures that conserve  forage fish that feed dependent marine life, protect ocean habitat such as deep-sea corals, reduce the incidental capture and killing of non-target species (known as bycatch), and integrate the use of comprehensive ecosystem plans into fisheries conservation and management. Position Overview The project director, conserving marine life in the U.S. (CMLUS) is responsible for delivering campaign outcomes focusing on nearshore and coastal habitat conservation as well as ecosystem-based fisheries management. They will do this by leading development and implementation of plans and activities to execute a five-year conserving marine life in the U.S. strategic plan. The ideal candidate has significant experience managing professional staff and designing and implementing successful environmental campaigns with a coastal habitat and fisheries management focus. This position supervises a team focused on Pacific coastal and ocean conservation. The project director reports to the director, CMLUS, and is located in Pew’s Portland, Oregon office. The position has a set time frame that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support.

The Finance Department is seeking to hire individuals with the competencies, skills, experience and adaptability necessary to deliver superior-quality work in a results-oriented environment. Contracts and Procurement ServicesPew’s organizational structure includes a centralized procurement and contracting unit called CAPS, housed within the Finance Department. The mission of the unit is to collaborate with Program and Operations internal customers to procure desired goods and services in a timely manner, at a reasonable price and in a way that is consistent with established Pew policies, procedures and cycle-time targets.  Position OverviewThe Associate, Contracts and Procurement Services will report to the Associate Manager, Contracts and Procurement Services. The team’s primary responsibilities will be to work with Program teams and Pew’s Operations departments to develop and execute contract documents. The Associate will provide oversight over the development of statements of work, deliverables, payment schedules and other contract requirements. As needed, the Associate with liaise with vendors and participate in contract negotiations. A successful candidate will become familiar with the core program work and be able to execute contract activities. The position is located at Pew’s Washington, DC office. This role will require the candidate to develop an understanding of institutional and program-specific policies and procedures, foster strong relationships across functional areas and maintain knowledge of the organization.

The project focuses on the development and dissemination of new research and tools that help to evaluate and identify the economically and politically viable steps needed to catalyze more effective and efficient global efforts and investments to reduce the flow of plastics entering the world’s oceans. Position Overview The senior associate, preventing ocean plastics will assist in disseminating research and tools developed by the project by managing contracts, planning convenings, drafting materials, and performing outreach to key non-profit organizations. In 2010, the department was reorganized and staff that had been spread throughout the institution were consolidated into a single unit. The public safety performance project was launched in 2006 and helps policymakers advance fiscally sound, data-driven policies and practices in criminal and juvenile justice systems that protect public safety, ensure accountability, and control costs. The mental health and justice initiative will connect stakeholders, establish models for reform, and improve the capacity of states and county governments to implement comprehensive alternatives to decrease the use of jails as crisis centers for people with severe and persistent mental illness. Working closely with both projects’ management team and communications staff, the Officer will be responsible for ensuring that the projects government relations objectives are well-planned, strategic and effectively implemented. He/she will coordinate our external partnership(s) and manage internal and external lobbyists (including contract administration, compliance and goal setting).  The Officer will perform research on pending legislation, law and regulations, monitor progress toward programmatic advocacy goals, report on same and design successful advocacy campaigns to advance policy goals.  The Officer will report to the Director of Government Relations.

Today, millions of families use alternative financing arrangements such as contracts-for-deed or rent-to-own to purchase a home, but these options often cost more and offer fewer protections than mortgages. This project aims to help inform policymakers and other stakeholders about market practices, evaluate borrower experiences and the efficacy of consumer protections, and promote access to safe, affordable home loans.  Specifically, the project will: - Produce credible, independent, and nonpartisan research to help answer questions about consumers’ experiences and opinions, the contract provisions of alternative home financing arrangements and how they vary across states, the federal and state laws that govern these arrangements, and potential solutions to documented problems; - Promote findings through educational outreach and national and local media; - Engage policy and business audiences about these issues; and - Provide customized technical assistance informed by research. Position Overview The officer will oversee components of the home financing project research and publication plan. The officer will have a background in mortgages, public policy, consumer finance, housing, market research, or a related field, and work experience undertaking projects involving many partners, complex issues, and extensive writing and presentations. The officer will be responsible for developing and implementing research on financial arrangements for home purchases, with a particular focus on the small mortgage market. The position collaborates closely with peers overseeing other components of the home loans research plan as well as policy analysts, government and community group liaisons, communications professionals, and other team members to help achieve the project’s goals.  The position, based in Pew’s Washington, D.C., office, reports to the manager, home financing. Our work is grounded in the best available science and pursues domestic and international conservation measures that are long-term and provide permanent, durable protections for marine ecosystems. Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy (“PBOL”) is a project of Pew which works to protect and conserve some of the Earth’s most important and unspoiled marine ecosystems through the establishment of very large, highly protected marine reserves. In 2006, the Pew Charitable Trusts (“Pew”) and several partners launched the Global Ocean Legacy project in an effort to establish the world’s first generation of great marine parks. In 2017, Pew and the Bertarelli Foundation joined forces to create, the Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy Project, with the goal of establishing the first generation of ecologically significant and effective marine protected areas around the world. This effort builds on a decade of work by both organizations to protect the ocean. Between them, they have helped to obtain designations to safeguard over 8 million square kilometers (3 million square miles) of ocean by working with philanthropic partners, indigenous groups, community leaders, government officials, and scientists. Specifically, in partnership with and support of program and portfolio leadership, the unit identifies and explores new public policy and research issues in which Pew might play a role; develops program designs, strategies, and initiatives to address these issues; and reviews, informs, and strengthens existing strategies and initiatives to meet new or revised objectives. The program agenda sub-unit within planning oversees the scheduling of and operational support to the agenda docket process, provides document editing and revision, and facilitates the effective sequencing and approval of board documents between the portfolios, strategy, the Executive Office, and board services (approximately 110 documents prepared for the board in FY20). Position OverviewThe senior associate will help lead the team in managing the production and review of all programmatic proposals and reports submitted to the board at its quarterly meetings, totaling 100+ documents each year. The division’s programs include the Pew Fellows Program in Marine Conservation (PMF) which every year provides three-year fellowships to scientists and other experts to support original, research-based marine conservation projects. The program invests in mid-career scientists to generate high-quality research related to ocean health. Since the 1990s, the program has supported over 180 fellows. Alumni and current fellows are invited to an annual meeting to build new collaborations and foster a community of conservation-oriented scientists focused on bringing data and research to bear on ocean protection. The program also hosts training workshops and program support for new fellows to strengthen the connections between their research and policy and practice. Our work relies on the sciences of conservation, biology, and economics to advocate for practical and durable solutions to the loss of biodiversity.  In the sea, reforms to how our oceans are managed are essential to address overfishing, pollution, and loss of habitat. Pew began its oceans program in the United States, focusing on ending overfishing and protecting fragile marine habitat. Starting in 2005, Pew’s ocean conservation program expanded around the world and played a significant role in reforming marine fisheries management in the European Union and on the high seas and creating marine reserves around the world. Our work is grounded in the best available science and pursues domestic and international conservation measures that are long-term and provide permanent, durable protections for marine ecosystems. Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy (“Ocean Legacy”) is a project of Pew which works to protect and conserve some of the Earth’s most important and unspoiled marine ecosystems through the establishment of very large, highly protected marine reserves. In 2006, the Pew Charitable Trusts and several partners launched the Global Ocean Legacy project in an effort to establish the world’s first generation of great marine parks. In 2017, Pew and the Bertarelli Foundation joined forces to form a new partnership, The Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy Project, with the goal of establishing the world’s first generation of great ocean parks. Between them, they have helped to obtain designations to safeguard over 8 million square kilometers (3 million square miles) of ocean by working with philanthropic partners, indigenous groups, community leaders, government officials, and scientists. Recognizing that new science indicates we need to protect 30 percent of our oceans, Pew and the Bertarelli Foundation created a new partnership with the goal of increasing the number of fully protected marine reserves from nine to 15 by 2022. Position Overview The senior associate works in partnership with project leadership to develop and implement campaign strategies to achieve the program’s objectives focused on large scale marine protected areas throughout the world. The senior associate works closely with project team members in Washington, D.C.; Tahiti, French Polynesia; Noumea, New Caledonia, and other locations, as well as with Pew staff from conservation science, government relations, communications, finance, and other departments. The position also engages with external entities, including scientists, non-governmental organizations, and local populations.  The senior associate, based in Pew’s Washington, D.C. office, and reports to the manager, Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy with interim reporting to the senior manager, Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy. The position has a set time frame that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support.
