In 2010, the department was reorganized and staff that had been spread throughout the institution were consolidated into a single unit. Government Relations is comprised of a Senior Vice President and five units overseeing advocacy of Pew’s programmatic agenda as well as operations and institutional advocacy. The priorities of the department are to: (1) provide relevant, timely and insightful advice on legislation of direct relevance to the Trusts, its programs and advocacy goals; (2) develop close effective relationships with key congressional offices, the administration and the government affairs staffs of major trade organizations relevant to our work; (3) develop Pew’s annual advocacy strategy as well as manage and facilitate its implementation; (4) work hand in hand with program staff and policy experts to guide advocacy from inception to successful completion; (5) coordinate, collaborate and communicate with and between Government Relations and program staff to advance institutional priorities, (6) monitor, track, review and approve all interactions between Pew staff and government officials including participation in coalition efforts and work with our external stakeholders; and (7) ensure full compliance by Pew with all applicable regulations related to lobbying and advocacy. Position OverviewThe Officer will be an integral part of the Government Relations team in Washington, D.C. and will have lead responsibility for providing government relations strategy to Pew’s safety and justice programs with a concentrated emphasis on the work of the Public Safety Performance Project and the newly launched Mental Health and Justice Partnerships project. The public safety performance project was launched in 2006 and helps policymakers advance fiscally sound, data-driven policies and practices in criminal and juvenile justice systems that protect public safety, ensure accountability, and control costs. The mental health and justice initiative will connect stakeholders, establish models for reform, and improve the capacity of states and county governments to implement comprehensive alternatives to decrease the use of jails as crisis centers for people with severe and persistent mental illness. Working closely with both projects’ management team and communications staff, the Officer will be responsible for ensuring that the projects government relations objectives are well-planned, strategic and effectively implemented. He/she will coordinate our external partnership(s) and manage internal and external lobbyists (including contract administration, compliance and goal setting).  The Officer will perform research on pending legislation, law and regulations, monitor progress toward programmatic advocacy goals, report on same and design successful advocacy campaigns to advance policy goals.  The Officer will report to the Director of Government Relations.

We pursue this goal by (1) enhancing the organization’s efforts to generate ideas for new initiatives and larger bodies of work; (2) applying a wide range of planning approaches to help programs turn ideas into effective action; (3) using evaluation to improve program performance and inform decision-making; (4) ensuring that staff has access to information that meets their needs to design, implement, and manage high-performing strategies, initiatives, and campaigns; and (5) collaborating with colleagues in preparing a wide range of planning and other types of documents for consideration by Pew’s board of directors. The strategy portfolio was created in 2017 through the merger of Pew’s longstanding planning and evaluation department and a new program unit focused on strategy and idea development and has approximately 30 professional staff. PlanningPew’s planning unit, within strategy, works in partnership with program and portfolio leadership and staff to identify, develop, and refine high-profile initiatives in line with institutional and programmatic needs and priorities. Specifically, in partnership with and support of program and portfolio leadership, the unit identifies and explores new public policy and research issues in which Pew might play a role; develops program designs, strategies, and initiatives to address these issues; and reviews, informs, and strengthens existing strategies and initiatives to meet new or revised objectives.  Position OverviewWorking in partnership with all planning team staff and relevant other program staff, the senior associate will support all phases of the planning lifecycle including developing new initiatives, refining existing ones, and helping to gracefully sunset projects. In performing this work, the senior associate will ensure the process is timely and effective, making smart course corrections when needed; and, most importantly, helping to make strategic judgments along the way to ensure the soundness of the projects’ program designs. The senior associate will help to respond to inquiries from Pew leaders or others that require limited research and a fast turnaround. The position offers the opportunity to shape the work of the environment, government performance, Philadelphia, and research and science portfolios which currently consist of 35+ projects, including focus areas ranging from environmental policy, land conservation, marine conservation and fisheries, and marine habitat protection to family economic security, health and human services, management and budget, and safety and justice. The position requires a talented public policy strategist with strong interpersonal, analytical, and writing skills. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to quickly master new topics and understand the interests and needs of an organization and its target audiences. Our environment work spans all seven continents with more than 250 professionals working at the local, national, and international levels to reduce the scope and severity of global environmental problems, such as the erosion of large natural ecosystems that contain a great part of the world’s remaining biodiversity, and the destruction of the marine environment. Pew has worked in the United States and Canada since 1990 to protect vast stretches of wilderness and more recently expanded our land conservation efforts to Australia’s Outback and Chilean Patagonia. Pew began its oceans program in the United States, focusing on ending overfishing and protecting fragile marine habitat. Starting in 2005, Pew’s ocean conservation program expanded around the world and played a significant role in reforming marine fisheries management in the European Union and on the high seas and creating marine reserves around the world. Our work is grounded in the best available science and pursues domestic and international conservation measures that are long-term and provide permanent, durable protections for marine ecosystems. International Fisheries Pew’s international fisheries project aims to secure an enduring system of rules and consequences for international fisheries that ensures the sustainability of fish populations over the long term and supports the health and resilience of the marine ecosystem more broadly. Our main areas of work include: the advancement of precautionary harvest strategies and effective compliance regimes for international fisheries; improved protection of vulnerable marine species and their nursery and spawning habitats affected by international fisheries; and improved policies and actions aimed at ending illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. Position OverviewThe officer, ending illegal fishing, international fisheries is responsible for delivering a campaign outcome within the ending illegal fishing portion of the international fisheries project, specifically in relation to improving implementation of and compliance with the port state measures. The position is based in London and reports to the manager, ending illegal fishing, international fisheries based in Pew’s Washington, D.C. office.

The unit oversees all communications policies, guidelines, and processes in order to ensure production of the highest quality work and effectively steward Pew's resources. Position OverviewThis position, based in Pew’s Washington, DC office, reports to the manager, communications and is a member of the Pew communications staff supporting the health programs portfolio. The senior associate works primarily on the antibiotic resistance project, which advances research and advocates for policies to slow the emergence of antibiotic resistance through improved use, and spur the innovation of urgently needed new antibiotics. The position requires creation and implementation of strategic communications plans and the ability to write clearly about highly complex health and science issues; excellent interpersonal and organizational abilities; proven writing and editing abilities for print and online platforms; and experience working with media and senior staff. IT is organized into distinct areas of responsibility, including strategic alignment of technology with the business, the evaluation and acquisition of software and hardware, implementation of new systems and data repositories, and providing support for the extended network, desktop computer hardware, and software applications. Position Overview The Associate, Desktop Support is responsible for providing technical support to staff at all levels within Pew. The position is a member of the desktop support team within the Infrastructure Operations group, which manages all technology infrastructure, desktops and cyber security. The associate position requires specialized knowledge in desktop support, including Pew’s desktop programs and operating systems and conversance with wireless technology and endpoint security as they related to remote and onsite troubleshooting the desktop user experience. The Associate, Desktop Support has no direct management responsibility, but is expected to contribute to the mentoring and professional development of junior staff within the desktop support team. Our work establishes durable reforms of the marketplace by defending policy gains made; ensuring protections against harmful, short-term balloon payment loans; making affordable small-dollar installment loans more widely available by encouraging additional large banks and credit unions to enter the market; extending successful state models for reforming state payday and installment loan laws to other states; and strengthening the capacity of nongovernmental organizations and regulators to maintain these gains.  The project conducts policy-relevant research and builds partnerships with industry and advocates for policies that reduce consumer risks, fosters a consistent regulatory framework for financial institutions, and improves market competitiveness. Depending on project needs, products may include issue briefs, visual data representations, revenue models, or other works of analysis in addition to full-length research reports. The senior associate will collaborate with colleagues working to advocate for research-based public policy reforms and will be called upon to contribute ad hoc analysis for campaigns.  The position, based in Pew’s Washington, D.C., office, reports to the senior officer, consumer and home finance. Pew began its oceans program in the United States, focusing on ending overfishing and protecting fragile marine habitat. Starting in 2005, Pew’s ocean conservation program expanded around the world and played a significant role in reforming marine fisheries management in the European Union and on the high seas and creating marine reserves around the world. Our work is grounded in the best available science and pursues domestic and international conservation measures that are long-term and provide permanent, durable protections for marine ecosystems. Project OverviewPew’s environment portfolio’s cross-cutting unit maximizes the effectiveness of projects and links the portfolio’s diverse bodies of work. The group manages and leads internal initiatives and ensures the quality, consistency, and compliance and accountability of Pew’s work across the environment portfolio.  Position OverviewThe senior associate, environment will provide high-level programmatic services for Pew’s environment portfolio and help serve to link the portfolio’s diverse bodies of work. The position reports to the senior officer management support, environment, and will work closely with the vice presidents of the portfolio and other leadership and cross-cutting staff within the portfolio, including the senior officer, environment.  The ideal candidate has demonstrated an ability to collaborate effectively across functional teams and has managed efforts to develop effective solutions to complex problems. In addition, the ideal candidate for this position has exceptionally strong people, communications, and organizational skills. This position is located in Pew’s Washington, D.C. office.
