Our environment work spans all seven continents with more than 250 professionals working at the local, national, and international levels to reduce the scope and severity of global environmental problems, such as the erosion of large natural ecosystems that contain a great part of the world’s remaining biodiversity, and the destruction of the marine environment. Pew has worked in the United States and Canada since 1990 to protect vast stretches of wilderness and more recently expanded our land conservation efforts to Australia’s Outback and Chilean Patagonia. Safeguarding these places offers an opportunity to conserve wildlife habitat, shorelines and landscapes for current and future generations. Our work relies on the sciences of conservation, biology, and economics to advocate for practical and durable solutions to the loss of biodiversity.  In the sea, reforms to how our oceans are managed are essential to address overfishing, pollution, and loss of habitat. Pew began its oceans program in the United States, focusing on ending overfishing and protecting fragile marine habitat. Starting in 2005, Pew’s ocean conservation program expanded around the world and played a significant role in reforming marine fisheries management in the European Union and on the high seas and creating marine reserves around the world. Our work is grounded in the best available science and pursues domestic and international conservation measures that are long-term and provide permanent, durable protections for marine ecosystems. International Conservation UnitThe international conservation unit (ICU) works across Pew’s environment portfolio to ensure development of robust policy positions and strategy, provide specialized expertise, assist in developing and launching of new bodies of work, and provide for internal and external coordination, including coordinating Pew efforts around major international meetings. The ICU is an integral part of the broader environment team, which currently focuses on establishing and improving marine protected areas; protecting ocean life on the high seas and in the deep sea; improving fisheries management, ending illegal fishing, and reducing harmful fisheries subsidies; preventing ocean plastics; protecting coastal habitats; and protecting Chilean Patagonia and Australia’s Outback and oceans. Position Overview The officer, international conservation unit is responsible for providing strategic advice and analytical expertise on climate change and environmental policy across the environment portfolio. The officer works with project teams to develop and implement strategies to achieve campaign goals while providing advice and expertise on topics such as climate adaptation and mitigation, blue carbon, the impacts of climate change on the environment, climate policy approaches, and engaging in relevant Multilateral Environmental Agreements. This position is based in Pew’s Washington, D.C. office, and reports to the project director, international conservation unit.

Our work is grounded in the best available science and pursues domestic and international conservation measures that are long-term and provide permanent, durable protections for marine ecosystems. Seabed Mining Project The waters far below the ocean’s surface, once regarded as vast, dark, and void, are now known to be rich in biodiversity and brimming with life. So too are the deep seabeds that lie below them. Recent advances in marine science technologies have revealed rich seafloor ecosystems around the planet. A significant fraction of those ocean bottom regions contain rich deposits of commercially valuable minerals. Most of those deposits are found on the international ocean bottom that lies beyond national jurisdiction, at depths ranging from 500 to 6000 meters below the surface. The richest deposits are in three distinct seabed areas: abyssal plains; hydrothermal vent zones; and underwater mountain chains. Advances in deep-sea technical capabilities and rising demand for minerals found in rich concentrations on the seabed have now combined to move deep-sea mining from science fiction to imminent possibility. The responsibility to write the rulebook that will govern all seabed mining beyond national jurisdiction is invested in the International Seabed Authority (ISA), the 167-member state body established by the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). In 2017 the ISA began work on a Mining Code that will establish the standards for environmental protection, the procedures by which those protections will be enforced, and the financial regime that will govern commercial exploitation if and when it occurs.  The objective of the Pew Seabed Mining Project is to influence the development by the ISA of an international mining code that provides for the potential closure of large, ecologically important areas of the deep sea to mineral extraction and imposes precautionary standards to minimize environmental damage if seabed mining does occur; and to work with scientists and other experts to secure the protection of biodiversity and habitat in the two regions where mining would likely first begin. Position Overview The senior associate, seabed mining project plays a critical, supporting role in the development and implementation of effective campaign strategies to achieve project objectives in the drafting of the ISA’s international mining code. This role reviews and communicates scientific and regulatory information, including the development of both materials and relationships. The senior associate reports to the associate manager, seabed mining project, and is located in Pew’s Washington, D.C. office. The position has a set time frame that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support.

Current initiatives focus on health, fiscal and economic policy, and safety and justice, and take into account significant trends such as evolving technologies, and the increasing racial and ethnic diversity in the United States population. Our teams explore and advance effective, evidence-based policies using credible, timely, and accessible research, assessing public support for change, identifying approaches that have proved successful elsewhere, and bringing together diverse perspectives to find common ground. We work in collaboration with organizations that share our commitment to rigorous research, measurable results, and public service, and we focus on developing durable policy change. In addition, our teams use strategic outreach and dissemination to ensure that good information is widely communicated to decision-makers, media, influential stakeholders, and the public. Position Overview The administrative assistant will support the program and project director and other staff by proofreading documents, preparing mailings, maintaining databases, scheduling and preparing meetings, managing expense reimbursements, and coordinating travel. It spans all of Pew’s programmatic work with a focus on advancing quality research and science and deploying research expertise to further the goals of ongoing projects. The portfolio reviews the design of new research projects across the institution to ensure they are high-quality, unbiased, and methodologically sound. The programmatic elements of the portfolio include specific projects related to biomedical science, environmental science, fiscal federalism, and Philadelphia public policy research. In addition, research and science has a role in communicating timely, accurate information on state issues to the general public as the Pew daily news publication, Stateline, is part of our organization. The portfolio also includes an operational aspect working to ensure effective management systems across the program department and coordinating with key partners across the institution. Student Loan Research The student loan research project is housed in the research and science portfolio and led by the director of the fiscal federalism initiatives. It provides research and analysis that informs the public and the policy process on the challenges of two issues: default on student loans and veterans’ higher education debt. The project uses a variety of methodologies including survey research, focus groups, and analysis of existing data sets. In addition, it has a robust outreach strategy that includes hosting convenings of major stakeholders, media outreach, and partnerships in the larger higher education, student loans, and veterans research communities. Position Overview The successful associate will provide core research on default and veterans’ educational debt issues; conduct extensive data analysis; contribute to and co-author briefs and other research products; critically review project materials; work with outside contractors; help implement the project’s communications and outreach strategy; present research findings in appropriate venues; work collaboratively with colleagues across Pew on current projects and explorations of new research opportunities and play a lead role in managing stakeholder relationships, meetings, events, and outreach.  The position, based in Pew’s Washington, D.C., office, reports to the initiative’s manager.
